Fans go crazy every time anything about Drake is uttered on social media, so on Jan. 19 it was no surprise when the Twitter world went wild over news that Drake dropped a new EP, despite the fact it only contained two songs.
It was actually quite surprising to me that Drake would drop something with that amount of content, but then again he’s difficult to predict. The catchy song “God’s Plan” broke the global Apple Music record for the opening day with 14 million streams, and broke the U.S. Spotify record for the most streams with around 4 million. Additionally, the song also debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 its first week.
Drake is usually known for his sad love songs, coining the phrase “Don’t Drake and drive,” as well as his select few rap songs which never disappoint, but this EP had a different feel to it for me.
Anyone who is a fan of the Toronto rapper would listen to the song and automatically think that there is a typical “Drake” beat about the songs. However, the lyrics take a completely different turn in my eyes because he repeats the line “there’s a lot of bad things that they wishing on him.”
Drake is at the point in his career where he has finally made it. It’s very clear through this specific song he sees everything that people say about him every single day. However, at the end of the day what is meant to happen for him will happen with “God’s plan.”
The second track “Diplomatic Immunity” takes a different turn from the first track as he raps about his power, wealth and stance in the industry. While this is not much of a surprise, this is a different view of Drake than I am used to. He is opening up more about things that go on around him and I am all here for it.
The Scary Hours EP was a complete yes for me. Although the EP was only two tracks, I believe there will be more to come in 2018 from the Toronto rapper.
