JESSE MONSIVAIS

On the 17th anniversary of 9/11, we remember the 2,983 victims who lost their lives. Sept. 11 was entitled as a national day of service by Congress in 2009. Today is dedicated to honor and reflect on the lives of those lost while paying tribute to those who have risked and continue to risk their lives to serve our country every day.

The public was invited to attend a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at Sherill Park, 222 S. Shoreline Boulevard. Representatives from the Corpus Christi Police and Fire Departments, the Port of Corpus Christi Police, as well as city and state representatives were in attendance. Corpus Christi Fire Department’s Pipes and Drums will perform along with the Honor Guard starting at 9 a.m. A moment of silence will be observed to correspond with the attacks beginning at 8:46 a.m. EST, the time the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

Americans across the nation are commemorating the attacks with tributes, volunteer work and new monuments to victims. According to the City of Corpus Christi, thousands of volunteers from the Coastal Bend are envisioned to join their neighbors in delivering meals, repairing homes, refurbishing schools and community centers, preparing care boxes, and delivering baked goods to the Corpus Christi Firefighters at Fire Station No. 1.

Director of the Senior Companion Program, Dianne Taylor, comments for the City of Corpus Christi Newsroom: “Sept. 11 is a day of history, emotions and reflection. For many Americans, it is also a day of service that provides an opportunity for citizens to put into action a shared belief that by joining our neighbors and local leaders, we can make our country stronger and better for decades to come.”
