Basketball is almost one month away, which means that the Islanders Men’s Basketball team is working hard and setting new team goals for their 2018-2019 season. Last season was not as great as the Islanders had expected, but was still good enough to make the Southland Conference 11-18, with the team making it to the first round.

With the lead and star player Joseph Kilgore, the Islanders had it all. Kilgore averaged 18.6 points per game in the 2017-2018 season. Since he is now graduated and gone, the Islanders must act quickly and replace their top scorer. However, the team still has an enthusiastic attitude and are very confident for their 2018-2019 season.

Emmanuel Toney #22, a Senior from Bowie, Md., pursuing his second degree in Communication Media Studies, has been with the team through ups and downs and is ready to start this new season with strong confidence, even without Kilgore.

“With losing Joe, we gained some older guys who are more capable of scoring,” said Toney. “If anything, it will allow us to score in a variety of ways. The practices are different, but they are still competitive. The main focus is becoming a mid-major breakthrough team and program.”

Toney believes that staying healthy and utilizing their depth as a weapon will help them achieve their 2018-2019 statistics. Toney scored an average of 7.2 points and an average of 2.3 rebounds last season. Being a senior, he believes that it is time to get everything right and leave a positive legacy on the Island.

“We are just trying to get better everyday now and get in synch with one another,” said Toney.

Toney is set to graduate Spring 2019 with plans to pursue his professional basketball career while using his degree in sports broadcasting or sports psychology.

Jake Babic #45, a Senior from Oakville, Ontario, Canada, and a graduate from Appalachian State University is pursuing a master’s in Communications. This is Babic’s first year playing with the Islanders and is ready to bring his experience to the court.

Babic played college basketball in Appalachian State University for three consecutive years and decided to have a fresh start at TAMU-CC. Babic also knew Kareem South #11, another player for the TAMU-CC men’s basketball team, since both South and Babic were from Canada, which emphasized Babic’s motivation to come play at the Island.

“As a fifth year senior,” said Babic, “I bring experience playing over 90 Division 1 games against teams like Duke, North Carolina and NC State. I bring veteran leadership to all the young guys. The team has really focused on the process of becoming a championship level team each day, so we are taking the small steps to get ourselves ready for March. Our main goal is to a win a conference championship.”

The Islanders are revving up for their first game on Wednesday, Nov. 7, against Howard Payne University at the American Bank Center at 7 p.m. Until then, the Islanders are practicing for their two upcoming scrimmages against Texas A&M University-Prairie View on Saturday, Oct. 7, and against Texas Southern University on Saturday, Oct. 27. Both scrimmages will be held at the University of St. Thomas located in Houston, Texas.
