On Oct. 16, the Political Science Club, Communications Club, Student Government Association and the First Year Learning Communities co-hosted a viewing party of the debate between Senator Ted Cruz and Democratic candidate Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke. At the time of the debate, Cruz was ahead in most polls by between seven to nine points.

The debate started at 8:00 p.m. and lasted about an hour. After the debate was over, Dr. Juan Carlos Huerta along with Dr. Shane Gleason led discussions about the debate, asking that students stay away from controversial issues and party specific questions.

“I am beyond amazed that you all came out for this,” said Gleason. The turnout was higher than expected with over 200 people in attendance.

“The difference in between these two candidates in this debate I think could not be more stark,” said Gleason. “Cruz was exceptionally strong debating. O’Rourke did a nice job, however, kind of appealing to those basic American Ideas.”

“For Senator Cruz,” said Huerta in response to a question about each of the candidate’s strategies, “it’s really about mobilizing his base, so you heard him talk a lot about, again, O’Rourke being too liberal.

“… I really thought you saw O’Rourke in there making so many references to things he was doing for the greater good, trying to make it clear that he can work with everybody and that he’s not Republican or Democrat because he knows he has to win independents and weaker partisan Republicans.”

If O’Rourke is to win the election, he will be the first Democratic Senator to represent Texas since 1993. Cruz Supporter Mathis Sternadel, Junior, said, “I think it’s going to be narrow, but Ted Cruz is going to pull through.”

Meanwhile, O’Rourke supporter Jeremiah Boldwin, Junior, said, “I feel very confident that he (O’Rourke) will be able to secure the election on Nov. 6.”

Early voting begins Oct. 22 and election day is Nov. 6.
