TAMU-CC mistakenly accepted 325 applicants who applied to the nursing program for the spring 2018 semester. The university apologized to 119 applicants for mistakenly sending them acceptance letters and urged them to re-apply next year.

Acceptance to the TAMU-CC Nursing program is extremely competitive. According to the TAMU-CC website, a competitive Nursing program candidate will have an ideal GPA of at least 3.5. Once accepted, if a student repeats a course twice without receiving a C or higher, the student will be dismissed from the program.

“It’s very unfortunate that it happened,” said Mayra Rodriguez, freshman Nursing major. “I know that when I applied to the program, the anticipation of the email that would determine my future for the next semester was all that I could think about.”

“I just want people to understand that the situation is something that we feel terrible about,” said Julie Hoff, Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Science, “and we acted as quickly as we could. We recognized the mistake on Friday around 5:00 p.m. in the evening. By 7:00 p.m., everyone received correct communication.

“We communicated the problem to leadership and University Administration was also aware. We were very transparent.”

Hoff is willing to meet with students to address their concerns and advisors are available to ensure that their applications are as strong as can be for the next application period.

“We are meeting as a group today to ensure the best practices that we can to ensure human error does not happen,” said Hoff. “We are also meeting to put checks and balances in place to make sure there won’t be a situation like this again.”

TAMU-CC accepts students into the Nursing program three times a year: during the spring, summer and fall semesters. The opening application date for fall 2019 nursing program is Dec. 15, 2018. For more information about the TAMU-CC Nursing program, visit, http://conhs.tamucc.edu.
