This past weekend, the TAMU-CC softball team attended a tournament in Houston, Texas. The team played a total of six games in which they won three. With them being 2-3 in the tournament overall.

For the first game on Feb. 14, the Islanders brought home a win against the University of Alabama Birmingham. With the score being 2-1, it happened to be Head Coach’s Kristen Zaleski very first win for the Islanders.

Later in the afternoon, the Islanders went up against Louisiana Monroe to play their second game of the day, in which they fell short during the last few innings. The Islanders ended up scoring 4-6 in trying to catch up to their opponent.

“The Monroe game that we lost Friday night,” said Zaleski, “we made too many errors.”

“Being able to clean it up, catch and throw, keep it simple,” Zaleski continued, “but then we weren’t swinging the bat well until the end, and it was already six to nothing that we were trying to dig ourselves out of, and so it just makes it tough to come back.”

“On a positive note, the fact that we were fighting to come back, I feel like it showed a lot of difference from the weekend before with still wanting to win, and expecting to win, and taking a better approach.”

As the Islanders prepared to play their third round of the tournament on Feb. 15, they played two, both wins against Lousiana Moore and South Dakota State. With it being the bottom of the fifth inning, the Islanders and Louisiana Monroe were tied until striking back at the sixth inning with getting runs in. This allowed TAMU-CC to take the win of 5-1. However, for the second game of the day, the Islander’s had a shutout with South Dakota State, keeping the score of 3-0 for the end of the game.

On Feb. 16, the Islanders fell against their opponent McNeese State University during their final game for the Houston tournament. This led the team to have a record of 2-3 for the outcome of the tournament since the match up against the Cowgirls was counted as a nonconference game.

The Islander’s host their tournament this weekend here at home in Corpus Christi in which they prepare to play against University of North Texas and Texas Southern University. For more information, click here to be taken to the Islander Athletics website.
